PIABA

Description

When disputes arise between brokers and investors, arbitration is typically processed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) This self-regulating body is counterbalanced by the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association (PIABA) to serve the interests of investors. PIABA is critical in protecting the rights of investors not only during arbitration but in regards to new laws and regulations that are being developed.

If you think about how it is that laws are made or regulations are done, and you talk about this organization called FINRA, which is what they call a self-regulatory organization, meaning all the people who work for FINRA are being paid by the broker-dealers, by Wall Street, by those banks, to regulate themselves. And so the only oversight is from the government, in the form of the SEC or Congress. And so all of these companies have a vested interested in lobbying and spending lots of money to make sure that the rules are set up in a way that favor them and not investors. An organization like PIABA tries very hard to be the counterbalance to that voice. And so we're here. Our only goal is to represent investors, to be an advocate for investors, and to really make sure that, in a consolidated way, Congress and the SEC and those making policy get a chance to hear what concerns investors have and what impact these new laws or regulations might have on investors and ultimately their retirements and their funds.
